About

Grace Chang (b. 1999, Chula Vista, CA) lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Chang is a multimedia artist whose work explores grief and the desire to know and recognize oneself through the use of self portraiture, repetition, depictions of distance, and gestures in nature. Chang carefully choreographs figures into landscapes molded and anthropomorphized by interpersonal relationships. Exaggerated poses and lighting create tension between the harsh artificiality of a staged image and lush, meticulously rendered foliage. She contemplates the fluid nature of roles tacitly understood to be fixed, such as mother and child, or present and future. The assignment or reassignment of these roles is evidently affected by a distance both physical and abstract which creates a barrier that obscures reality from the actors who occupy them.
